CityMalcesine with its historic centre, long promenade, smaller beaches and excellent restaurants, it is one of the most beautiful and popular towns on the lake Lago di Garda. It lies on its eastern shore, north of the cityGarda. Take a panoramic cable car ride up the mountainMonte Baldo (2.218 m above sea level), towering directly above the town of Malcesine. From here you can see the whole lake. It is an excellent destination for hiking and cycling enthusiasts. From the top you can ride along the ridges towards Torbole or in the opposite direction to Torri del Benaco.
In the historic center, intertwined with narrow streets with a variety of bars, cafes, shops and restaurants, be sure to visit Scaliger Castle, whose tower offers a magnificent view of the circular walls of the three courtyards and of Lake Garda. The Scaliger Castle with its fortifications and medieval tower dates back to the 13th century and has been declared a national monument. In the centre of the town you will also find the Captain's Palace in Gothic-Venetian style with its frescoes. In 1786, Wolfgang Goethe was interrogated at the local town hall on suspicion of espionage for drawing sketches of the castle. Goethe recalls the incident in his work about his trip to Italy. Other important monuments of Malcesine are the 11th-century church of Santa Maria della Fontana, the church of St. Stephen and the 18th-century town hall.
The town also includes a small harbor with colorful houses, where luxury yachts of wealthy visitors and traditional fishing boats are moored. Take a boat across to the lemon tree townLimone sul Garda and try the yellow special Limoncello - Lemon liqueur. Water sports enthusiasts (kitesurf, windsurf, sailing) and hiking will find a place to enjoy. The lake allows pleasant swimming on pebble beaches with a steeper entrance to the water.
